One of the world’s most famous – or infamous, depending on one’s point of view – solos, David MacLaren, an Oxford and Sandhurst graduate, was posted to the re-formed Royal Highland Regiment (Black Watch), but was medically retired from the British Army after losing his left arm and left eye in a car bombing in London in 2029. His injuries were repaired with cybernetic prostheses, and he now works in a quasi-official capacity combating international terrorism, both political and corporate, a mission he approaches with utter detachment and apparent ruthlessness. He was once heard to describe himself as “The blunt instrument His Majesty’s Government needs from time to time, but can pretend doesn’t exist.”
